Please try again later. is a common error in Magento 1 and Magento 2 during the Magento store or Magento extension installation process. Why does this error occur?

Service Temporarily Unavailable the server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later.

The message shows that the store is not available right now and it may be the cause of:

  • server capacity problems
  • enabled maintenance mode
  • server misconfiguration

During installation process, Magento creates the file maintenance.flag, if Magento checks that file exists, and it will show to users the error messsage as I showed above. Generally, it will automatically remove maintenance.flag file after the processing has been done, but there are something went wrong and you cannot delete it.

Service Temporarily Unavailable in Magento 1

You should check if there is a file maintenance.flag in the Magento root folder.

Solution

Delete the file maintenance.flag in Magento root folder.

Service Temporarily Unavailable in Magento 2

It is very similar to that in the Magento 1. The file now is .maintenance.flag not maintenance.flag. There is a dot at the begining of the file.

Solution

  • Delete a file called var/.maintenance.flag in the Magento root folder
  • Remove Magento cache if there is any: php bin/magento cache:flush
