Magento 2 Search Settings
In this part, I am going to guide you through the main components and how to configure the search feature in the default Magento 2.
Quick Search settings
The Quick Search box placed on the top right corner of the website will show visitors results such as Best-sellers, Newest products, or Most Viewed items, according to the backend configuration.
When customers type in keywords in the search box, search results, which are already set up, will be displayed. Based on the settings, the result details can include other information such as names, prices, short description, or images. If customers select a result, they will be taken to that page instantly.
Enable Search of a product
- Log in Magento 2 Admin Panel, then navigate as Products > Inventory > Catalog
- Select the product to enable the search function.
- Configure the Visibility:
- Not Visible Individually: The product is hidden from both catalog and search.
- Catalog: The product can be viewed on Catalog.
- Search: The product can be searched.
- Catalog, Search: The product can be viewed on Catalog and searched.
Advanced Search configuration
By using Magento 2 advanced search settings, you can enable your customers to search for products in a deeper filter. They can fill in different parameters at the same time, for instance the SKU, price ranges, description, and more.
To use this feature, visitors will click onto the link located at the website’s footer. Thanks to multiple factors considered, the results will be closer to what users are looking for.
Adding a new field in the search form is possible
- Log in to your Admin Panel and go to Stores > Attributes > Product, then select an attribute from the Attribute grid
- Go to Storefront Properties
- Enable the Use in Search by choosing ‘Yes’
- Add the attributes to Advanced Search form by turning ‘Yes’ in the Visible in Advanced Search
- Save changes
Search Results
The search results list will be displayed after users search using the Quick Search box or the Advanced Search section. They will appear in two ways: a product grid, or a product list.
It is possible for you to configure how many results are included in a page. This setting is essential if the product list reaches a second page.
Weighted Search
The Weighted Search can be used to set priorities for the search results. In case there are multiple attributes in the Advanced Catalog Search form, search results will be decided upon the attributes’ weight. The higher the weight is, the more priority it has. The highest priority is 10.
For instance, if ‘color’ has the weight of 5, while ‘description’ has the weight of 1, then when users enter the keyword ‘blue’, the results will include only products that have ‘blue’ color, but not the products with the ‘blue’ word in the description. You can configure this in the ‘Search Weight’ section of the ‘Storefront Properties’ page.
Catalog Search settings
Now we will explain how to enable the MySQL search engine and control the valid query text size:
- In the Admin Panel, follow the Stores > Settings > Configuration
- Select Catalog option and Catalog Search:
- Minimal Query Length indicates the number of characters in minimum that can be filled by users
- Maximum Query Length indicates the number of characters in maximum that can be filled by users
- Search Engine: select the default MySQL
- Save changes
Search Terms configuration
Search Terms refers to the keywords that customers may use to search for in a website. The bigger the keywords are, the more common they are.
Edit Search keywords
- Navigate Marketing > SEO & Search > Search Terms
- In the Search Terms grid, select the keyword that needs editing
- Set changes, then click Save Search
Add keywords
- Click Add New Search Term
- Enter the words you want in the Search Query
- Set the page results in the Redirect URL
- Enable Display in Suggested Terms: Keywords are suggested if the searched keywords bring no result.
- Click Save Search.
Delete keywords
- In the grid, choose the keywords you want to delete
- Set Actions to Delete
- Click Submit
